A New Canaan police officer will receive a medical service award next Wednesday for saving his father-in-law?s life after he had a heart attack.
Officer Kevin Casey says he was working last Memorial Day, but was able to stop by his in-law?s house to have dinner. Casey says his relative, John Sandstrom, was eating a hot dog one moment, and unresponsive the next. Casey rushed to his patrol car to retrieve an automatic external defibrillator (AED), which he used to administer electrical shock to Sandstrom. The Caseys and Sandstroms say Kevin Casey was in the right place at the right time and without him, John Sandstrom might have died.
A couple made an anonymous donation to the New Canaan Police Department so the defibrillators could be purchased. Officer Casey hopes to someday meet and thank the couple.
