Police in southwestern Connecticut kicked off their holiday weekend by setting up DWI checkpoints Friday.
With more cars on the roads, the New Canaan Police Department is taking preventative measures when it comes to stopping people from driving drunk.
It didn't take long for Officer Joe Faranga, manning a checkpoint on New Norwalk Road, to catch an alleged drunk driver.
"You don't always smell something," one officer said. Police said an inability to follow direction is a key sign a driver might've been drinking. They said they also look for slurry speech and glassy or bloodshot eyes.
Officers said their first arrest was a driver from Ontario, Canada. Police said the driver was on his way to Bridgeport and admitted to having three drinks in three hours beforehand. He failed the field sobriety test as well as a Breathalyzer, police said.
Officers said they'd also issue tickets at the checkpoints for any other violations, including those who break seatbelt and cell phone laws.
