The New Canaan Fire Department has partnered with Connecticut Career Fire Chiefs Association to create a statewide fire safety public service announcement.
The video focuses on preventing fires through the proper use of extension cords and surge protectors in residences and commercial spaces.
Firefighters say they've responded to several high-risk situations that were caused by the misuse and overload of extension cords and surge protectors, especially in older homes that have a lack of electrical outlets.
"They count for 9% of all home fires. They cause 15% the annual fire deaths in the United States. And electrical fires are the leading cause of property damage within the United States," says Chief Albe Bassett.
