Grief counselors were at West Elementary in New Canaan Tuesday following the death of a 10-year-old-student who tested positive for the flu.
The town is mourning the loss of the fourth-grader now identified as Nico Mallozzi.
Mallozzi passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning after returning from a hockey tournament.
Though he tested positive for the flu, his official cause of death has not been determined.
According to the superintendent, Mallozzi was wonderful, friendly and known throughout the school as the voice of the afternoon announcements.
"Everybody knows him,” says Dr. Bryan Luizzi. “They all knew his voice certainly, but all knew who he was. He was very spirited, happy, the kind of kid who leaves a mark on your heart as an educator. When you meet him and see him. Just makes you smile every time you see him."
Superintendent Luizzi says they will be sending information out to parents on how to address the situation with their kids.
