New Canaan residents are concerned about the approval of the Merritt Village Residence complex after human remains were found near a historic burial ground.
The town previously approved the local developer's plans to build the complex on Park Street near the Maple Street Cemetery with graves that date back to the mid-1800s.
Archaeologists have since found human remains near the site, and the town has decided to re-evaluate the approval. The developer, M2 Partners, says it will re-examine the plans.
M2 Partners says the Merritt Village complex will have 110 units, with half of them being rentals. It says its construction won't disturb the cemetery.
Some New Canaan residents who feared the project could put their efforts to preserve the past in jeopardy also circulated a petition, which now has about 1,000 signatures.
The town is expected to meet with the developer later in the new year to discuss plans moving forward.
