New Canaan police are warning residents about a scam involving text messages claiming recipients have unpaid traffic tickets and face arrest if they do not respond.

Police said multiple residents reported receiving messages stating they were summoned to court and warning that ignoring the notice could lead to arrest and other penalties.

Police said the messages do not come from a legitimate phone number and noted that the state of Connecticut and local police departments would not notify residents of legal matters in that manner.

Authorities urge residents not to respond to the messages or click any links requesting immediate action.
