New charges have been filed in the slaying of a long-time Stamford jeweler who was killed during a robbery in late March.
Stamford police responded to a violent robbery at Marco Jewelers on the afternoon of March 28. There they found they found the owner, 69-year-old Mark Vuono, shot dead.
Sgt. Sean Boeger, of the Stamford Police Department, says, "Mr. Vuono was known very well in the community. He's been here for many, many years and people are still very quite upset by what happened and they're awaiting justice to happen."
The new charges in the case follow a joint investigation between Stamford police, the FBI, NYPD, and Greenwich police.
The three suspects are all from New York. They were initially arrested on parole violations, but this week were indicted on federal charges in the case.
Robert Rallo and Thomas Liberatore now face a life prison sentence or the death penalty if convicted.
Paul Prosano is also looking at serious prison time. Police say he drove the other two to Marco Jewelers on the day in question.
Surveillance video inside the store captured what happened.
"Mr. Vuono was shot and killed as a result of struggling with one of the suspects while the robbery was occurring. We were able to get a pretty good view of clothing, mannerisms of the suspects and basically, using video and other technology in terms of tracking vehicles and other stuff like that across state lines, we were able to track them down and identify them," says Sgt. Boeger.
Police say a search of the car they were in and one of the suspect's homes found nearly 100 pieces of jewelry stolen from Marco Jewelers.
Vuono's son released a statement, telling News 12, "Our father was a hard-working man who cared deeply for his family, friends and community. He will be missed by all who knew him in what can only be described as a senseless and unimaginable tragedy. We will hold him in our hearts forever."
Police say each suspect has an extensive criminal history and they met while serving time together.
