New Fairfield is working to recover from Tuesday's powerful storm that left one person dead.
A tree fell on a passing car,
killing a 41-year-old woman in front of a 3-year-old child who was with her. The child was unharmed and was rescued by police, who say they had a hard time getting to the scene because of blocked roads.
Damage was substantial throughout town, with downed trees, utility poles and wires.
By Wednesday afternoon, 95 percent of the town was without power. Schools were closed Wednesday.
Officials asked residents to shelter in place and urged caution for anyone who must head out.
The town opened a shelter at the high school, where food was served Wednesday evening.
