Your child’s school could soon be adopting new guidelines for stricter cellphone rules in an expected vote this week.
The state Board of Education is expected to vote on adopting bell-to-bell cellphone bans and also limit how much time students spend using school-issued technology at its special meeting Wednesday.
The new guidance would serve as a recommendation for school districts, most of which already have policies on cellphone and technology use.
Bell-to-bell cellphone restrictions are currently in place in 70% of elementary schools, 71% of middle schools and 31% of high schools.
The guidance also comes after legislation to implement a bell-to-bell cellphone ban in Connecticut schools ultimately died this past legislative session.
Currently, local school districts remain the chief authority on the use of cellphones by students.
State leaders have been pushing to limit phones in schools to decrease distractions and increase learning.
