New Haven served up a slice of history Friday, as more than 4,500 pizza lovers packed the New Haven Green for the Apizza Feast, breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest pizza party.

The previous record was held by Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2023.

To qualify for the record, participants were required to remain within the festival area until 7 p.m. They were also required to eat at least two slices of pizza.

“This is my favorite kind of record attempt,” said Thomas Bradford, an official adjudicator with Guinness World Records. “It’s always important, especially these kinds of attempts where it brings the community together. As you can see, there’s such a buzz, everyone is coming together, they get to eat pizza, they get to try the Guinness World Record, which is always exciting.”

The record-breaking event was held in conjunction with the A-1 Toyota Apizza Feast, part of New Haven’s annual celebration of its iconic pizza culture.
