Recent tragedies across the country are prompting New Milford officials to train for active shooters.
The New Milford Police Department is practicing active shooting drills all week at Schaghticoke Middle School.
Police Chief Spencer Cerruto says it's important for his team to learn how to communicate during a crisis.
"The officers are getting experience through practical exercises. This is the only way to get experience and feel like they are under pressure," Cerruto said.
The police chief says they have learned from every tragedy on how to respond better. He wants parents to feel at ease when sending their kids back to school this year.
New Milford police say these drills are done at least once a year.
