New parking fees were scheduled to go into effect Monday in some parts of Norwalk, creating tension with some local businesses.

People are supposed to start paying for parking in the Wall Street area, but when commuters go to pay, it says two hours free parking.

Up until recently, street parking was free on holidays and Sundays. There was at least two hours of free parking during the rest of the week.

Talk of pay for parking first came about back in September, and it has fired up local shops and restaurants that say if people have to pay to park it may scare them away.

Mayor Harry Rilling has heard from both sides and is trying to figure out this issue.

"This is a work in progress," said Rilling. "Nothing is permanent. Whatever we find needs to happen to make it better to make it more user-friendly."

News 12 reached out to the Norwalk Parking Authority for some clarity on pay for parking but has not heard back.
