PSEG Power Connecticut has announced that will build a natural gas power plant in Bridgeport.

The plant will be located on the company's existing Bridgeport Harbor Station site and will join the coal plant already there. That coal plant has been the frequent target of protesters.

PSEG says it will take down three existing oil tanks to make way for the new natural gas facility, located right by Long Island Sound. That will begin in early to mid-2017, as soon as it gets the appropriate environmental permits from the state and construction permits from the city.

The natural gas facility, in which the city has invested $550 million, should be online by 2019.

As for the existing coal facility, PSEG says coal burning may not completely end there until 2021. As for the existing plant itself, it will work with the community to discuss what happens to the iconic "candy cane" stack. It is still deciding what to do with the rest of the existing plant, but hopes to use the space for some sort of energy production in the future.

The project is expected the bring 350 construction jobs and 20 permanent jobs when it is completed.
