Newtown 7th grader wins Connecticut Spelling Bee Championship

A 7th-grade student in Newtown took home first place in Connecticut's Spelling Bee Championship.
Hayden Hughes came in first place from a field of 46 students who participated in the state competition in West Hartford.
She correctly spelled words including "berceuse," "chalcolithic" and her winning word, "dropsical."
Hughes will represent Connecticut in the 2024 National Spelling Bee in Port Washington, Maryland.
The competition begins on May 26.
