A former middle school guidance counselor is charged with sexually assaulting a seventh-grade student at Nathan Hale Middle School in Norwalk.
According to an arrest warrant, Luisa Melchionne, 47, of New Canaan, performed sex acts on the boy inside her office – during school hours. Police said that a fellow teacher tipped off authorities in late April, after he saw explicit text messages on Melchionne's phone.
The warrant alleged that the abuse began in the spring of 2023, and ended this February, when the boy transferred to Roton Middle School. It says the two exchanged nude photos, with the suspect allegedly comparing the boy's anatomy to her husband's.
Melchionne's spouse filed for divorce in February, seeking primary custody of the couple's three children – one of which is just two years younger than the alleged victim.
Phone records also indicated that Melcchione sent the child money through the Apple Cash app, allegedly for "food and Uber."
Later, the child told investigators things escalated.
"The child stated that he would receive 'lap dances' while in her office," the warrant states. "The child [also] stated that Melchionne performed oral sex on him on numerous occasions … The child stated that the door would be closed and the window blind pulled down for privacy."
Melchionne is now charged with second-degree sexual assault, illegal sexual contact and risk of injury to a child.
"Despite how disturbing the allegations are, she is still entitled to the presumption of innocence," said Mark Sherman, her attorney. "These are just accusations."
Melchionne was released on $500,000 bond Thursday afternoon, but a judge confined her to house arrest and barred her from contact with minors, except her own children. Prosecutors said they have notified the Connecticut Department of Children and Families about the charges.
Sheman argued that his client is not a danger to the community.
"These accusations are an isolated incident in an otherwise unblemished career, and that's important to know," he said. "I haven't seen any of the evidence yet. What we do know about her is that, for over 20 years, she's been a dedicated mom, wife and educator."
Norwalk Public Schools tell News 12 Connecticut that Melchionne was terminated on June 14 – six weeks after the warrant says district officials were first told about the investigation.
In a statement, the district said: "The safety of our students is our first concern. Luisa Melchionne is no longer employed by Norwalk Public Schools. Norwalk Public Schools is cooperating with the Norwalk Police Department's investigation and has no further comment."
