March is National Kidney Month and a Norwalk woman is sharing her story to help raise awareness about kidney disease.
Jennifer Giannino is a teacher who donated a kidney to one of her former students.
The two recently passed the one-year anniversary of the surgery, and Giannino says they are both doing great.
She now volunteers with the local chapter of the National Kidney Foundation to help raise awareness about kidney disease and the need for kidney donors.
Right now, 3,000 people in Connecticut are on dialysis, 1,300 are on the waiting list for a transplant and 150 people in the state get a kidney transplant each year.
The Kidney Foundation has an event at a Bridgeport Sound Tigers game on March 19 where a portion of the ticket sales will go to the foundation. Staff say they will also provide information to people and spread the word about their annual walk, which is coming up in May.
