More police officers will be patrolling the city streets this summer to help combat the spike in summer crime.
As part of the Summer All Out program, more than 1,000 officers are being sent into high-crime areas. The NYPD says this program will help decrease crime, though overall, the crime rate in New York City has dropped.
Citywide, there has been an 8 percent increase in shootings compared to last year. The Daily News says 75 percent of reported shootings are in Brooklyn and the Bronx, where 313 officers have been reassigned for the summer.
More than 600 new officers graduated from the academy last week and all the new members have been assigned to patrol high-crime neighborhoods.
