Police are working with residents to try to deter theft. The NYPD has released tips to help people avoid having their cellphones, wallets, laptops and even headphones stolen.
They say to keep iPads, tablets and headphones out of plain sight.
Police also suggest limiting the amount of cash and credit cards carried.
They also warn residents to pay attention, saying that sometimes thieves work as pairs, with one person causing a distraction so the other can pickpocket.
