A 14-year-old person of interest is believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl in a Morrisania schoolyard.
Police have identified the victim in the shooting as Evette Jeffrey, of The Bronx.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says it happened around 5 p.m. when a group of students exiting Bronx Latin High School got into a fight.
She says one of the students pulled out a gun and fired at least three shots. At least one of those shots struck Jeffrey in the head.
News 12's Tim Harfmann spoke to parents about the shooting.
Police say Jeffrey is not a student at Bronx Latin. She attended neighboring Morris High School.
Police say she was not engaged in the fight.
"We know that we have an obligation to create safe environments for young people and that is what we try to do every day," said Mayor Eric Adams.
"She should be home right now eating dinner with her family, instead we are talking about another child victim of gun violence," said Tisch.
Police say the 14-year-old person of interest is not yet in custody.
