A newly redesigned park in Oceanside just unveiled Tuesday is paying tribute to a fallen hometown hero.

NYPD Detective Luis Alvarez died in 2019 from cancer stemming from his work on Sept. 11, 2001 at ground zero.

Through his advocacy work for his fellow first responders, funding for 9/11 heroes will remain in place until 2092.

The retired NYPD Bomb Squad detective is known for his testimony weeks before his death with Jon Stewart in a plea to extend the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund Act.

Alvarez's family joined Nassau Executive Laura Curran for the unveiling of the new Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park, which was renamed via legislation introduced by Curran in 2019.

"It means so much that were able to dedicate this park, this little patch of green less than a mile from his home to a fallen American hero whose altruism ranged from his bravery on the job during 9/11 and of course to his dying day," says Curran.
