Officials hailed a Bridgeport police officer as a hero today for finding an 11-year-old autistic girl who went missing.
Mayor Bill Finch visited police headquarters to personally honor Officer Carmen Loschiavo for getting the girl safely home to her parents.
Officer Loschiavo says the call came over the radio at around 8 a.m. Thursday. The girl reportedly left her home on Maple Street and was believed to be heading for the train station because she had a fascination with trains.
Loschiavo says he spotted her on the Stratford Avenue Bridge and got her safely into his police car with help from a witness. The officer says she had been walking in busy traffic near train tracks and the edge of the bridge.
Officials say the girl's parents were grateful when Loschiavo reunited them with their daughter.
