Two dogs were killed in a house fire Saturday in Bethel, the town's fire marshal says.
It happened just before 7 p.m. on Bethpage Drive.
Fire Marshal Thomas Galliford said when firefighters arrived, they found flames on the first floor.
No one was home at the time, but three dogs were inside. Firefighters removed the dogs and police provided aid to the injured animals.
Authorities say two of the dogs died from their injuries as a result of smoke.
The Red Cross is assisting the residents with temporary accommodations and comfort kits.
Galliford said the fire appears to have been an accident and started on the stove in the kitchen.
He said this is the third fire in the last two months that was caused by combustible items left atop a cooking stove. Of those three fires, this fire caused the most damage.
Residents are reminded to keep any combustible materials off of and away from their stoves and ovens. They are also encouraged to check to see if they have working smoke alarms.
Galliford said the home did have working smoke alarms.
