Bridgeport is mourning nine people who have died, including several young children, when an overloaded SUV flipped into a Florida canal. Seven of those victims lived in Bridgeport.
Police say there were three adults and six children that died in the accident on Monday night in South Florida. All nine victims are related to family in Bridgeport.
Some of the victims lived in other states.
They were in Florida for a birthday party.
Bridgeport Reverend Herron Gaston met with the family Wednesday morning.
“This is a sad situation,” said Bridgeport community leader Tony Barr.
Police say the driver Pamela Wiggins, who would have turned 57 Tuesday, couldn't make the turn and went off the road in Belle Glade, Florida. The overloaded SUV hit a guardrail before flipping into the canal, which runs parallel to the road. The sheriff's office identified two of the passengers who died as 5-year-old Kamdien Edwards and 21-year-old Anyia Monique Lee Tucker both of Bridgeport.
“Our hearts are broken. As a community we stand united. We want the families to know that we are here for them 100%,” said former Connecticut State Senator Dennis Bradley.
The victims were related to a Bridgeport Board of Education custodial staff member.
Mayor Joe Ganim said in a statement, "the amount of grief that comes with losing a loved one is never easy."
Bridgeport Superintendent Carmela Levy-David released a statement extending the district's sympathies to the worker, who has not been identified. Members of the community spoke to this tragedy.
“My heart is broken. I’m saddened. The community will rally. We will come together. The power of prayer is needed. The power of prayer will prevail. I’m asking everyone to wrap their arms around all the life that was lost in this situation in this accident,” said Barr.
Patrice Wiggins, Pamela Wiggins' daughter, set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
She posted on Facebook, "Lord Please Wake me up from this Nightmare... Lord I know you make no mistakes but Lord I'm having a hard time processing this one."
Of the 10 people in the SUV only one survived.
There is a GoFundMe set up.
