Officials say a Milford man was killed in a fire at his mobile home.
The flames broke out at the residence just off Bridgeport Avenue around 5 p.m. Thursday. The home was declared a total loss, and the city demolished what was left of it on Friday.
Neighbors say 69-year-old Neil Smith died in the fire. He was a Navy veteran and sailed on the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War.
Bill Lowell, his neighbor and best friend of 60 years, says he went into the burning home to save Smith but was too late.
This marks the first fatal house fire in Milford in two years.
