The cause is still not yet known of an eight-alarm New Canaan house fire yesterday that investigators say likely spread from the back porch. Eight companies responded to the blaze at 43 Fawn Lane, where the exterior frame is the only part left standing. Firefighters say the cold weather made for treacherous conditions. "Your gear freezes, your equipment freezes, everything gets cold to the touch, everything gets slippery," said New Canaan Fire Department Lt. Roy Gagne. "The driveway was a sheet of ice." Family members escaped unharmed, and said they are trying to recover anything spared by the flames. For extended footage of New Canaan fire, click on iO Extra on Channel 612.
