Bridgeport's fire chief says they are looking into why the smoke detectors in a condo where a child was killed were apparently not working.
Three-year-old Sincere Pettway died and five others were hurt in the fire early Sunday morning.
Chief Brian Rooney says his department wants to get the word out that the city will provide smoke detectors for free for anyone who needs them.
Rooney says firefighters have installed almost 50,000 of them since Bridgeport's Safe Sleep program began in 2005, more than any other city in America.
He says people need one in every bedroom, every kitchen and anywhere there is a heating unit.
