A serious crash early Monday morning on Route 34 in Orange left one person dead and one person injured.
A tractor-trailer and a car collided at the intersection of Route 34 and Orange Center Road around 3:55 a.m. The truck hit a telephone pole and a tree, which brought down a traffic light.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
Orange Fire Department Chief Vaughan Dumas says police are investigating and looking into accident reconstruction. Connecticut State Police are also assisting with a truck squad.
The crash caused multiple road closures, redirecting commuters to take alternate routes.
"If you're going westbound to the Town of Derby from New Haven, you're going to have to turn southbound on Racebrook Road, go down to Route 1, take it down to Grassy Hill Road in Milford and come back up to Route 34 on that side,” says Dumas.
Fire officials also advise commuters to drive safely as the weather gets colder, especially with the recent rainy weather.
"When it does rain, the oil from the asphalt comes up, it does make the road slippery and with the leaves on the ground it makes it more [slippery] almost like driving on snow,” says Dumas. “So, people should slow down."
The names of those involved in the crash have not yet been released.
