A Bridgeport woman who became paralyzed after being shot 12 times is thanking News 12 for helping her regain her independence.

Five years ago, Rosa Gonzalez needed a handicapped accessible apartment, which News 12 helped her get. She also received an $8,000 ramp. But Gonzalez also needed a handicapped accessible van, which took a little longer.

Joe Kaliko at the Needs Clearing House says they have raised the money to buy Gonzalez a vehicle that will help her gain a small measure of the independence she lost.

"It's like winning the lottery for me," Gonzalez said.

With her new low-millage Dodge Caravan, Gonzalez says she can now go grocery shopping and get to medical appointments without anyone's assistance.

Gonzalez says she is grateful to the anonymous News 12 viewer who donated the money.

"I am so grateful to News 12 and the Needs Clearing House for helping me get this van, which will allow me to go to the doctors and grocery shopping. I can have a life again. This is so amazing and I cannot say thank you enough," said Gonzalez.

Kaliko thanked the Greenwich-based charity Ride for Kids for helping to make the gift possible.
