Residents of Pelham Bay held a protest Saturday against the construction of a high-rise apartment complex on Middletown Road.

Community leaders and elected officials demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the planned construction by waving signs and placards.

Though the site has legitimate work permits, community leaders are worried that the construction is linked to local landlord Jacob Selechnik, who allegedly has a bad track record, including 23,000 violations and more than $90,000 in fines on properties throughout New York City.

Community leaders say Selechnik owns the property on Middletown Road, though Selechnik says he has no ties to the property.

Elected officials from the area also worry that the building could bring too many people to the neighborhood and cause overcrowding in the local schools.

Local residents plan to create a petition against the construction and demand an investigation by the Department of Buildings.
