People's United Bank is parting ways with Stop & Shop, the financial institution has announced.

People's United Bank announced in a press release Thursday that it will begin closing branches inside local Stop &Shop supermarkets.

The bank, which is headquartered in Bridgeport, didn't give a specific reason, except to say that "customer banking preferences and retail shopping behaviors have significantly evolved."

The bank says each branch will be given 90 days' notice prior to closing, and the entire pullout will happen over a period of several years.

The Stop & Shop locations were the only branches with extended weekend hours.
