The girls lacrosse program of Darien High School is no stranger to winning state titles, but Tuesday's championship win was different. For the first time in history, the blue wave finished undefeated in a season, claiming the program's 20th state championship all-time.
Two of the best girls lacrosse programs in the nation traded goals in the first half. Anna Von Kennel tallied a few nice assists and Darien led 9-5 at halftime.
But behind Devin Russell, New Canaan fought back to tie it with under two minutes to go. "Heart was beating a little fast definitely but I think that we just knew that this was our season and that our defense can win championships for us and that's exactly what they did today so I'm really proud of the defense and everyone that dug deep this game," Humphrey said after the game.
Blue Wave head coach Lisa Lindley said she's never had a team finish a season with an undefeated record. "It wasn't a great game for us, we played sloppy, but we came up with the plays when we needed to. That's the sign of a competitor and a winner and the girls dug deep when they had to."
The 14-13 final score was the exact same score as last year's state final between New Canaan and Darien. This time, the blue wave came out victorious.
