Lawyers revealed on Tuesday that a plea deal could be in the works for a teenager accused of killing his high school classmate in Milford.

Christopher Plaskon is charged with stabbing 16-year-old Maren Sanchez last year at Jonathan Law High School. Police say the stabbing came after Sanchez declined to go to prom with Plaskon.

Both sides confirmed that they are working toward a possible deal in the case, which is contingent on the suspect's mental state.

Plaskon's defense team received psychological reports from the state on Tuesday. The defense says their own experts have shown that Plaskon was mentally ill and could not have premeditatedly murdered Sanchez.

In recently released search warrants, Plaskon's parents said he "had a significant history dealing with mental health issues." Warrants also reveal that the suspect wrote two jailhouse letters, saying "he hears voices and that is the reason he did what he did." But police say Plaskon "writes about an insanity deal" that could get him just one or two years in prison.

Plaskon will be back in court on Jan. 28.
