Police say two officers were shot in New Haven Wednesday morning. A suspect is dead.

They say the officers were trying to serve a search warrant out of West Haven before a standoff and exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police. The suspect was killed in the exchange.

The two officers are in the hospital recovering from injuries not considered life-threatening.

Police say there were other people in the residence and officers were concerned about getting them out safely.

Authorities say the suspect stopped responding to the officers after a period of time, and it was discovered the suspect was struck and dead.

The Office of the Inspector General has taken over the investigation.
