Police: 5 injured in shooting at Brass Mill Center in Waterbury; suspect still at large

Waterbury police say five people were shot at the Brass Mill Center.
It happened just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Authorities say the shooting occurred in the central area of the mall. They say they believe it was carried out by a single suspect, described as a man in his early 20s, armed with a semi-automatic pistol.
The condition of the victims and potential suspects were not immediately available.
The shooter has not been caught or identified, but officers are interviewing witnesses and reviewing footage to gather details on his exit route from the mall.
Investigators believe the suspect was familiar with the victims, though the motive remains unclear, according to officials.
No deaths have been reported.
Gov. Lamont released a statement on the shooting:
“This afternoon there was a tragic mass shooting at the Bass Mill Center mall in Waterbury, a place where everyone should feel safe. We are grateful to law enforcement, who acted swiftly. Details are still forthcoming, but the Connecticut State Police will be assisting Waterbury Police with the investigation. Our hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims, and their families who have been impacted by this incident.”
Congresswoman Jahana Hayes released the following statement on the shooting:
"I stepped out of a town hall this evening to hear the devastating news of a mass shooting at the Brass Mill Center Mall in Waterbury, resulting in multiple injuries. It is a tragic reality that no place in our community is safe from gun violence. My prayers are with the injured and their families at this time.
"This is an active investigation with details still forthcoming. I have reached out to Mayor Pernerewski to offer the full support and assistance of my office and applaud the quick response of local law enforcement whose actions were critical in mitigating further harm and securing the area."
Police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
