Police say a man stabbed a woman in a wheelchair with a screwdriver in the middle of a grocery store in Bridgeport Tuesday.
A woman who works at the Save A Lot store, who asked not to be identified, says the suspect started harassing a disabled woman for money before the situation turned violent.
Police say 55-year-old Earnest Perkins stabbed the woman in the grocery's produce section. They say Perkins has a lengthy criminal record, and when they arrested him, they found a screwdriver in his pocket covered with blood.
A worker at the register says there were a lot of people in the store at the time, including small children.
They say that she thinks the woman was stabbed at least six or seven times and at least twice to her head.
The worker says the woman was not badly hurt and refused medical attention. She has not been identified.
Perkins was arraigned and is being held on a $750,000 bond.
Court records show Perkins has a history of assault charges.
