Police: 78-year-old woman killed in car crash on Park Avenue in Bridgeport
A 78-year-old Prospect woman was killed in a car crash in Bridgeport, and police say speed may have been a factor.
Sydel Kugell was riding in a white-colored Lexus sedan driven by her 81-year-old husband when they were hit by an oncoming car on Park Avenue and Thorme Street Wednesday around 4:55 p.m.
Police say the car Kugell was riding along in was making a left turn onto Thorme Street when it was struck by a blue-colored Acura that was traveling at a high rate of speed in the right lane of the northbound side of Park Avenue.
Kugell was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.
Her husband suffered injuries but is expected to be OK.
City Councilwoman Michelle Lyons says the fatal crash isn't the first major crash in that area.
Last month, a SUV slammed into a house just up the street.
"We try to put lights up here to make sure that we can control the speeding, but now we're having problems with that because people are trying to beat the light," Lyons says.
Lyons says she thinks speeding in the area is a major concern.
"I think this is horrible, it's terrible. The speeding here on Park Avenue is atrocious."
The driver of the other car, a 19-year-old Bridgeport man, and two other passengers were taken to the hospital.
Police say a juvenile who was riding in the blue-colored Acura ran away from the scene after the crash but later came back to request medical treatment.
Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash.
No charges have yet been filed, and News 12 has reached  out  to the mayor's office and is waiting for comment.
Anyone with additional information related to the crash is asked to contact the Bridgeport Police Department Traffic Division at 203-576-7640.
