Fairfield police say the man arrested in Bridgeport for allegedly killing and cannibalizing a homeless man was taken into custody weeks earlier after trying to kill himself. Police say Tyree Smith, 35, attempted suicide inside a local CVS on Jan. 12 by cutting his arm with a box cutter. The incident happened days after he allegedly butchered Angel Gonzalez with an ax and ate parts of his body in a cemetery. Authorities say Smith was not wanted for murder at the time and that his criminal record was clean. Smith's family says he has a history of mental illness, and officials say he legally possessed prescriptions for psychotropic medication. The suspect has since been referred to the Greater Bridgeport Mental Hospital for evaluation.
