Hartford police say the suspect, Andrey Desmond, of New Britain, shouted sexually obscene, anti-Muslim and vulgar statements at Khan before hitting and throwing her to the ground.
Desmond was stopped by a worshipper before being arrested by Hartford police.
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin released a statement, saying, “I was in attendance at the Eid al-Adha prayer service with Rep. Khan … and it was a beautiful, peaceful gathering of families coming together in faith and community. I'm deeply troubled by the assault that she endured following the prayer service.”
Gov. Ned Lamont also posted a statement to Twitter, saying in part, “My heart is with Rep. Maryam Khan … it’s disturbing to me that this happened on a holy day meant to be marked with peaceful prayer.”
