A 28-year-old man was fatally hit by a garbage truck while working in Fairfield Wednesday.

It happened just after 7 a.m. on Campfield Drive.

Two United Carting Company workers were picking up trash when one of the workers was hit by the truck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to Bridgeport Hospital but has seen be released and has not been charged.

The victim's identity has not been released.

The Fairfield police crash reconstruction unit is investigating the incident.

"It's tragic, and it's too early to come up with any type of real cause to the accident ... we're just here at a sad event, and it's tragic," says Lt. Edward Nook.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration was also called to the scene to investigate, along with the state medical examiner.

Campfield Drive was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
