Fairfield police say a man stole 175 packs of gum across southwestern Connecticut. Police say a loss prevention officer at Shaw's supermarket saw 21-year-old Kenneth McManus stuffing dozens of packs of Orbit gum into his coat in January. According to police, the officer recognized McManus from surveillance tapes at another Shaw's store in Stratford.McManus is scheduled to appear before a judge next month on larceny charges.Police say they believe McManus stole more than $500 worth of gum. Investigators say some items are stolen for their retail value, but that they are baffled by this case.
