A swimmer pulled from Mountain Pond in Danbury on July Fourth more than two hours after he went missing has died, officials say.
Danbury police say the 17-year-old swimmer was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
Authorities were alerted about the missing swimmer near Long Ridge Road just before 3 p.m. He was located at 5:30 p.m., brought to shore and taken to receive medical treatment.
Getting to the missing swimmer proved to be difficult. The Danbury Fire Department said the pond is located on an over 80-acre piece of land owned by the Town of Bethel and is a heavily wooded area.
Once they found the person's last known location, crews had to drag two 350-pound rescue boats up a steep and rocky incline to launch the boats and begin their search. First responders also had to carry scuba and other rescue gear into the woods.
Members of the city's volunteer fire companies, the Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue and the Bethel Fire Department were all called in to assist.
