Police: New Milford man struck Norwalk police cruiser; charged with DUI

Police say the driver, Carlos Gavilano, 55, fled the scene in his car, but was located a short time later.

A New Milford man is accused of striking a Norwalk police cruiser during a hit-and-run Friday, police say.
Police say at 11:47 p.m. an officer and their vehicle were struck while driving near 205 Main St. by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The driver, Carlos Gavilano, 55, fled the scene in his car, but was located a short time later, according to police.
The officer was transported to Norwalk Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Police say their investigation found that Gavilano hit another vehicle in the area of 157 Main St. prior to hitting the police cruiser.
The driver of the first car hit was not injured.
Gavilano was arrested and taken to police headquarters Friday.
He is charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility resulting in serious physical injury, evading responsibility resulting in property damage and failure to maintain lane.
Gavilano's bond was set $25,000 and he is expected to appear in court on Sept. 6.
