New Canaan police took part in a live firearms training exercise on Monday.

Officers had to make split-second decisions about whether or not to use their weapons.

Situations during the training included a motor vehicle stop, a domestic violence call and a school incident. The officers used real guns and ammunition and not simulators during the exercises.

After each scenario, the action froze and the officers reviewed what happened.

Norwalk's police chief says the training is essential.

"Normally, we go to the range and we shoot outdoors at stationary targets," says Chief Leon Krolikowski. "This is a little more interactive. It's a scenario that could be a real-life scenario and it gives the officers a better feeling for making a decision in a real-life sutation."

Krolikowski says the training is also critical given the number of officers who have been killed in the line of duty this year.

The mobile trailer will be at the New Canaan Police Department through Wednesday.
