Police probe into Shelton HS staff leaves many questions unanswered
Details are still limited into why the headmaster at Shelton High School was put on paid administrative leave as police investigate her and other staff members at the school.
Police Chief Shawn Sequeira told News 12 that he couldn’t go into specifics about the case. He did say that police are probing whether Dr. Smith and other personnel are following the proper legal procedures when dealing with possible criminal situations.
Chief Sequeira said it began last week when the police were called to the high school for an incident involving juveniles. Because of the age of those students, he wouldn’t say what the incident was.
While working on that case, questions came up about whether the situation was handled correctly in compliance with Connecticut General Statutes by employees.
Police confirm their investigation is not limited to just Dr. Smith. They also wanted to stress that the safety of students is their top priority.
“Right now, your students are safe, the school should be running as normal…We're just evaluating. This is what we do,” says Chief Sequeira.
The chief told News 12 he would like to wrap up this case as quickly as possible, but that it won’t be rushed. He also says Smith and others could face disciplinary measures through the district if the state’s attorney office declines to pursue criminal charges.
A notice was posted on the Shelton schools site last week that made it clear that Dr. Smith was not arrested or escorted off the property by police. However, it did not include any specifics.
One parent told News 12 that she fells “left in the dark” and that it has led other parents to speculate.
The chief says the reason he's not releasing specifics is to protect the integrity of the investigation
