Nassau and Suffolk County police responded to two illegal street takeovers on Saturday night.
Suffolk police say 40 cars were involved in one incident at the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road station parking lot. Officers were able to safely stop the activity and arrested two people.
Police say Jason Merino, 24, of Medford, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation. Micheal Watson, 19, of Ronkonkoma, was cited and issued several traffic tickets.
Police also discovered a large illegal car rally on 711 Stewart Ave. in Uniondale. They say Daniel Tiburcio, 25, of Wantagh, was arrested and charged. He was arraigned on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Nassau police have since released the following statement:
"If you take part in this unlawful activity, you can expect a robust police response. You will be ticketed or arrested and we will seize your car. In addition, we are in communication with our partners in the NYPD and Suffolk County Police: there will be no safe haven.”
Last month, Suffolk County announced it was forming a street takeover task force, comprised of specialized police officers whose primary focus will be to shut down driving expeditions which involve blocking public roads for dangerous stunts, disrupting traffic and posing public safety risks.
