Police say a pair of vandals posted a video of themselves damaging the headstone of a former Bridgeport baseball coach last Sunday.
The since-deleted video depicted the suspects taking a hammer and screwdriver to the headstone of Angel M. Serrano Jr. at Bridgeport’s Lakeview Cemetery.
Serrano Jr., a beloved baseball and softball coach for the Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, died two years ago after suffering a seizure at age 41.
The double-sided headstone bears ornate tributes to the late coach and Anthony Padilla, his 16-year-old son who was fatally shot in 2010. The family says it will cost them $16,000 to replace.
"I got a call saying that somebody had just bashed my dad's headstone,” said his son, Angel Serrano. “As we got over there, we noticed all the marks on the headstone as well as a video on Facebook."
The family says they have no idea who could have carried out the attack or why.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal also spoke out to condemn the crime:
"I am just outraged, and I've been in touch with the family. I've contacted Chief Roderick Porter and I know he will put the full resources of his department into investigating,” he said.
Despite the cruel attack, Angel Serrano says his father’s legacy can never be erased.
