A Quinnipiac poll released Thursday shows that the majority of Connecticut residents support the death penalty.
The poll shows that 61 percent of the 1,575 voters polled were in support of capital punishment.
Retribution was cited as the top reason why supporters want the death penalty. The top reason given by those who oppose it was the belief that the government doesn't have the right to kill.
Gov. Jodi Rell and the Legislature are currently involved in a heated debate over the issue. Gov. Rell says that she intends to veto a bill passed earlier in the month that would abolish the death penalty.
