A pregnant woman was fatally shot and her boyfriend was injured while both victims were sleeping in bed Monday, Bridgeport police say.
The shooting happened inside 42 Washington Terrace. Police were alerted to the area for a ShotSpotter activation around 5:35 a.m.
Karla Bermudez, 22, was shot multiple times and later died at St. Vincent's Medical Center.
Police say Bermudez was 23 weeks pregnant and that her unborn baby did not survive the shooting.
A 23-year-old man, identified as Bermudez's boyfriend, was also shot, but sustained an injury to his buttocks and is expected to survive, police say.
Police believe shots were fired into the home from outside the first floor.
"I heard shots and I knew it wasn't firecrackers," says Carol, of Bridgeport. "I said 'call the police, call the police.'"

Police say Bermudez did not live at the home where the shooting happened and was only staying the night with her boyfriend.
Police did not say if any arrests were made, but that they are investigating the incident as a homicide and are working with the boyfriend to get more information.
Her family tells News 12 Bermudez's cousin was shot to death in Bridgeport Sunday. Heriberto Marquez, 24, was killed in a shooting near the corner of Iranistan Avenue and Hanover Street.
"So now the grandmother lost two grandchildren in less than two, three days" says his mother, Elizabeth Delgado.
His mother, Elizabeth Delgado, tells News 12 the family can't make sense of how this happened.
"Everybody is devastated. I thought it was a dream but when I woke up, reality hit me and it's no dream," she says. "It's no dream, he's gone."
Delgado describes her son as a gentle giant.
"He was very caring, funny... he always helped people," she says.
Delgado says she's praying whoever is behind her son's slaying is caught. She says that's the only way her family can begin to heal.
"If anybody knows anything, say something... if it was your child, you'd want someone to say something," she says.
Police tell News 12 they don't believe these two killings are connected to each other, or a third slaying they're investigating. Late Friday night, 25-year-old George John, of Shelton, was shot to death in Bridgeport.
