It's National Burn Awareness Week and News 12 Connecticut's Justin DeVellis sat down with experts for some tips on how to stay safe at home.
This year's theme is dedicated to preventing burn injuries at home.
"Even a small burn injury can be a life changing event," Dr. Alisa Savetamal of the
Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital says. "Prevention is the best thing."
Experts say a vast majority of burn injuries are preventable.
"Three quarters of all burn injuries happen in the home," says Jason Bresky, RN, says. "It's really important to focus on having a safety attitude and a prevention attitude."
Be wary of space heaters and fireplaces, experts say.
Prevent cooking injuries by turning pot or pan handles inward and never leave food unattended on the stove.
