A man was killed and several others were injured – including two children - in a fire at a Jersey City apartment building on Thursday morning.
Officials say the fire started in a unit on the second floor of the Summit Avenue building around 3 a.m. They say two adults and two children were found unconscious in a bedroom.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says that 59-year-old Lahcen Elmguielle died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead sometime before 8 a.m. Officials say that a 40-year-old woman, an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl were also inside the unit. They are listed in critical condition at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.
The prosecutor also says that a resident on the third floor was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
Three firefighters were treated for burns, while another was treated for smoke inhalation.
The American Red Cross is helping 18 people who were displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
